Protecting Alberta’s Wildlife Heritage - Alberta Wildlife Federation Opposes Bill 10
Edmonton, AB — On November 17, 2025, Bill 10—the Red Tape Reduction Statutes Amendment Act—was introduced in the Alberta Legislature. If passed in its current form , this legislation would permit “Harvest Preserves,” for the shooting of high fenced domesticated Trophy elk and deer and possibly other species. This would overturn existing prohibitions under the Livestock Industry Diversification Act.
The Alberta Wildlife Federation, representing more than 14,000 members province-wide, opposes Bill 10 Harvest Preserves section because it conflicts with three core principles of the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation:
Wildlife as a Public Trust Resource
Prohibition on the Commercialization of Dead Wildlife Products
Wildlife should only be killed for a legitimate purpose
Earlier this year, an independent survey of over 800 Albertans found that 72% expressed opposition to Harvest Preserves, underscoring widespread concern about the potential impacts on wildlife stewardship.
To support informed dialogue, the Federation is launching the Wildlife Matters Campaign to:
Share factual information about Bill 10 Harvest Preserves and its implications
Provide resources for Albertans to learn more and ask questions of policy-makers
Explore legal and conservation options consistent with our mission
Our goal is to ensure decisions about wildlife management reflect science-based principles and the public interest.
